How to Scan a Handwritten Assignment for D2L Submission

Summary

This document provides a step-by-step guide on how to scan a handwritten assignment for submission on D2L using three different options: phone, printer/scanner, and webcam. For each option, it explains the process of capturing the image, saving, and renaming the file, and uploading it to D2L.

Body

Overview

You can submit handwritten work to D2L using any of the following methods:

  • Your phone’s camera or a mobile scanning app
  • A printer/scanner
  • Your computer’s webcam

Always follow any specific directions provided by your instructor.

Using Your Phone (Camera or Scanning App)

Smartphones work very well for scanning handwritten assignments—no photography expertise needed.

Recommended scanning apps (free):

  • iOS: Notes app (built‑in), Microsoft Lens
  • Android: Microsoft Lens, CamScanner

Scanning apps provide alignment guides and lighting correction, which can greatly improve clarity.

Steps

  1. Complete your work on a clean, flat sheet of paper.
  2. Ensure good lighting—natural light works best.
  3. Open your phone’s Camera or a scanning app.
  4. Hold the phone directly above the page, keeping it steady.
  5. Tap the screen to focus, then take the photo or scan.
  6. Review for clarity; retake if blurry or cut off.
  7. Crop or enhance if needed (most apps can auto-adjust).
  8. Rename the file if required.
  9. Log in to D2L, open the assignment, click Upload, select your file, and submit.

Using a Printer/Scanner

This method provides the cleanest results, especially for multi‑page work.

Steps

  1. Place your handwritten assignment flat on the scanner bed.
  2. Make sure the scanner is powered on and connected to your computer.
  3. Open the scanner software (varies by model).
  4. Choose settings such as:
    • Resolution: 300 DPI recommended
    • Format: PDF for multi-page scans; JPEG/PNG for single pages
  5. Preview the scan to ensure the page is fully captured.
  6. Scan and save the file to your computer.
  7. Rename the file if needed.
  8. Log in to D2L, go to the assignment, click Upload, choose the file, and submit.

Using Your Computer’s Webcam

Use this only if other options are unavailable—webcams usually produce lower-quality images.

Steps

  1. Place your handwritten assignment flat in front of the webcam.
  2. Ensure bright, even lighting.
  3. Open a webcam-enabled application (Camera app, Zoom, etc.).
  4. Adjust paper positioning so the writing is readable in the frame.
  5. Capture a screenshot/photo of the document.
  6. Locate and rename the screenshot if needed.
  7. Upload it to D2L using the Upload button in the assignment area.

Final Tips

  • Make sure your writing is readable and fully visible before submitting.
  • PDF is the preferred file format for most instructors.
  • Submit early in case you need to rescan or re-upload.
