Introduction
If you're taking a course which will use GitHub Classroom, you will need to join the St. Cloud State University organization within GitHub. The following are the instructions/steps to take. These will help you join the SCSU org, and accept a GitHub classrom 'join' link.
Instructions
- Create a personal gitHub account.
- https://github.com/signup
- Use your personal email address, *not* your SCSU/official email address.
- If you already have an account, continue with step 2.
- Once notified by the GitHub system via email, please begin accepting membership in the St. Cloud State University enterprise.

- Example email. Keep this email message open for use in upcoming steps.
- Click the Join @St-Cloud-State’ button to continue.

- You’ll see a screen similar to this:

- Click the ‘Add verified email’ button.
- Add in your SCSU email address in this field:

- Example: ajsmith@go.stcloudstate.edu, or ajsmith@stcloudstate.edu
- Click ‘Add’.
- The system will send a verification email to the address entered in step 6.
- Open that email and click on ‘Verify email address’:

- You should see ‘Your email was verified’ in the top left corner area of GitHub:

- Return to the message you’ve kept open from step 4 and click the ‘Join @St-Cloud-State’ button to continue.

- You should see this:

- Click ‘Authenticate to join’ button. If you’re not currently authenticated, you’ll need to sign in.
Once completed, you’ve joined your personal GitHub account with the St. Cloud State University organization in GitHub.
GitHub Classroom and assignments
Once created, your instructor will send a link(s) to your GitHub Classroom assignments. The first time you accept an assignment in each GitHub classroom, you’ll need to join the classroom by carefully selecting your identifier (StarID/email) from the list.
