Pharos Cloud Pilot Participants Only: Setting Up Desktop Application for Printing

Introduction

St. Cloud State's ITS department is piloting a new secure printing service for faculty and staff (Pharos Cloud). A limited number of departments are involved in the pilot (ITS, Career Center, Math, Stats). If you are involved in this pilot, please use the instructions below to setup the desktop application to begin sending print jobs to the printer from your computer. 

Faculty and staff who are participating in the pilot and are having issues printing should contact their department's primary technician. Any other questions about this pilot should be sent to informationtechnology@stcloudstate.edu

Instructions

1) Instructions for downloading the desktop application:

Instructions for University-owned Windows computers:

1. Navigate to the Company Portal desktop app on your University-owned Windows computer

2. When prompted for your Minnesota State affiliation, select "SCSU" and then click "Done"

3. Find and click on the SCSU-Pharos Print Scout app within the Company Portal (please note the version number may differ from what is pictured)

4. Click on "Install"

5. Once installed, find and click on the Pharos Print app

6. You may be greeted with a "Welcome to Pharos Print" message with a login prompt and should follow step 6a, if you do not receive this prompt, skip to step 7

6a. If you receive the prompt:

  • Click on "Login to continue" then you should be redirected to a Minnesota State login page requesting permissions
  • Select "Accept" and then you should automatically get a notice that says "Authenticated successfully", and you may close that browser tab
  • Navigate back to the Pharos Print app and you should see a six-digit passcode appear (which will also be emailed to you), select "Continue" and the window should disappear, proceed to step 7
    • **Note your passcode should be treated like a password**

7. You are encouraged to pin the app to your task bar 

8. You should now be able to securely release prints at any secure release printer (will have a Pharos Secure Release QR code), yet if you want to enable direct printing (sending print job to print immediately; no secure release), follow the instructions below to add printers to your desktop app

Instructions for University-owned Mac computers:

1. Navigate to the SCSU Self Service desktop app on your University-owned Mac computer

2. Find and click on the SCSU Pharos Secure Print Installer within SCSU Self Service

3. Click on "Install" then the installation should begin (may take a few minutes)

4. Once installed, select the small printer icon on the menu bar at the top of your screen, then select "Show Main Window"

5. You may be greeted with a "Welcome to Pharos Print" message with a login prompt and should follow step 5a, if you do not receive this prompt, skip to step 6

5a. If you receive the prompt:

  • Click on "Login to continue" then you should be redirected to a Minnesota State login page requesting permissions
  • Select "Accept" and then you should automatically get a notice that says "Authenticated successfully", and you may close that browser tab
  • Navigate back to the Pharos Print app and you should see a six-digit passcode appear (which will also be emailed to you), select "Continue" and the window should disappear, proceed to step 6

You should now be able to securely release prints at any secure release printer (will have a Pharos Secure Release QR code), yet if you want to enable direct printing (sending print job to print immediately; no secure release), follow the instructions below to add printers to your desktop app

 

2) Add printers to desktop app for direct printing

1. Open the Pharos Print desktop application

2. Select the "Direct Print" tab within the desktop app 

3. Select the "+ Add" button

4. Select the printer(s) you want to be able to directly print to

  • To select multiple printers, hold down the Ctrl or Command (⌘) button on your keyboard while you select printers

5. Select "Add"

6. Once added, you can select your preferred printer then select "Set Default" to establish that printer as your primary printer 

 

The instructions above are for setting up your desktop application for printing. Additional instructions are available on the Knowledge Base such as:
