Social Security Card for International Students

Introduction

Social Security Card for International Students

Question

I’m an international student. How do I get a social security card to work on campus?

Answer

If you do not have a U.S. social security number, you must apply for one before you can start working or be entered into the payroll system. Please contact the Center for International Studies for information on the documents needed to apply for a SSN. You cannot work on campus without social security numbers.

After you apply for a social security card, the Social Security Administration will give you a document that shows proof of application. The SCSU Student Payroll Office will use this document as a placeholder until you receive your U.S. Social Security card in the mail. Once you receive your Social Security card, you will need to do two things:

  1. Sign your social security card in ink; and
  2. Take your social security card to the SCSU Student Payroll Office, AS Building Room 123, so it can be photocopied.
