Trash and Recycling

Recycling is encouraged across campus. Single-stream recycling receptacles for aluminum, trash, and paper are available throughout University buildings. Any paper without food contamination may be placed, unsorted, into appropriate containers. Provisions are also in place to recycle many other materials, by-products, and waste generated on campus.

This voluntary system of recycling and trash reduction depends on your participation and your encouragement of others to do the same. Recycling reduces disposal costs for the University, decreases the demand for new resources, and minimizes environmental impact.

Confidential materials: Confidential materials, or those that include information such as social security numbers, must not be placed in regular trash or recycling containers. Shred containers are provided throughout campus for the secure disposal of such documents.

Personal Offices: All faculty and staff are responsible for their own personal removal of trash and recycling from personal offices.  What this means is that each individual is expected to bring their personal office waste and recycling and dump them into central bins on a regular basis.

The goals of this are three-fold:

  • Bring awareness to each individual’s contribution to the campus waste stream.
  • Encourage improved efficiency and sustainability.
  • Allow our Facilities staff to focus their efforts on high-traffic and student-facing areas.

Facilities has placed central trash and recycling bins in common areas on each floor of each building where individuals can dump their personal trash and recycling. Department offices will be provided with extra trash bags that people can use when their can liners become soiled and need to be replaced.
