Introduction
St. Cloud State University (SCSU) is undertaking a strategic modernization of its campus printing environment. The University is transitioning from a fragmented mix of aging and limited-access devices to a more standardized fleet of modern, networked multifunction printers (MFPs). While a portion of the new fleet will remain department-specific to support business needs, the design intentionally expands shared devices in common and high-traffic areas to improve overall accessibility and consistency.
Under the new model, faculty, staff, and students will utilize secure release printing, allowing them to submit print jobs and retrieve them from available shared devices across campus. This approach significantly improves flexibility compared to the current environment, where access is often tied to specific devices or locations, and creates a more efficient and user-friendly printing experience.
This transition also includes the adoption of Pharos Cloud, replacing legacy print management software that was incompatible with Entra ID. The move to a cloud-based platform enables secure print functionality, supports modern authentication standards, and provides the foundation for a streamlined and cost-effective print environment.
FAQ
Answers to frequently asked/anticipated questions are below. We will continue to post answers as additional questions come in.
Will I still be able to print from a University-issued computer?
Yes. Students, faculty, and staff can continue sending print jobs from University-issued devices, such as workstations or lab computers. To print, select the “HuskyPrint Secure” print queue. Your job will be securely held until you release it at a printer.
Are the current printers being removed?
Yes. Most, if not all, current networked printers will be removed as part of this transition.
If you have a USB-connected or desktop printer, please contact your technician to arrange for the device to be picked up. If you need to retain a USB-connected printer due to specialized media, equipment, or technical requirements, please complete the USB Exception Request form.
What capabilities will the new printers have?
The new multi-function printers will be one of the following models:
- Ricoh IM C2510
- Ricoh IM C3010
- Ricoh IM C4510
All new printers will include the following features:
- Newly manufactured devices
- Color and black-and-white printing, scanning, and copying
- Single-sided and duplex (two-sided) printing, scanning, and copying
- Scan-to-email functionality
- Secure Print Release, with both mobile app and passcode options
- Support for letter, legal, and tabloid paper sizes
- Sorting and collating capabilities
- Envelope printing
- Paper capacity of 1,000+ sheets
Many devices also include stapling functionality, and select printers offer additional features such as hole-punching and expanded paper tray capacity.
Can students, faculty, and staff use any printer on campus?
Students, faculty, and staff will be able to use any of the new shared-use printers located across campus. A list of HuskyPrint shared-use printer locations and their deployment status is available on the Knowledge Base.
Although many printers are available for shared use, some will be located within certain departments to support specific business needs. These printers may not be accessible for general use, particularly in confidentiality-sensitive areas (such as HR and clinical spaces), or in high-traffic or high-volume printing environments. Non shared-use printers are not on the list of printer locations referenced above in order to avoid confusion about which printers are available for general use.
What is secure print release?
Secure print release allows you to send print jobs to a secure, cloud-based queue where they are held until you’re ready to release them. You can release your documents at a printer by using the mobile app or entering a passcode on the touchscreen. This approach improves convenience, enhances security, and helps reduce unnecessary printing (e.g. misprints, outdated materials.)
How does secure print release protect sensitive data?
Secure print release ensures that documents are only released when you are physically present at the printer. This helps prevent sensitive materials from being left unattended and viewed by others.
Will I still be able to use direct print release instead of secure print release?
No, direct print release (where a document prints immediately after being sent to a printer) will be discontinued. Moving forward, secure print release will be required.
This change provides several key benefits, including more consistent and standardized access, enhanced security, and reduced backend complexity. It also improves efficiency by minimizing common issues such as printing to the wrong device or printing outdated versions.
Additionally, secure print release enables the University to maintain a consolidated print fleet, which helps drive significant cost savings.
Can I choose my own secure print release passcode?
No. Passcodes are system-generated to ensure they are unique and secure for each user.
What should I do if a printer isn’t working or is out of supplies?
If a printer is unavailable, you can use another nearby shared-use device to release your print job. Printer locations and deployment status are available in the Knowledge Base.
If you encounter an issue with a printer, please contact HuskyTech to report it so it can be resolved promptly.
How will support and service issues be handled?
HuskyTech serves as the central point of contact for all printer-related support and service requests. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to submit a ticket for assistance.
HuskyTech/IT will troubleshoot the issue and escalate to the appropriate vendor if needed, whether the issue is hardware- or software-related.
To ensure timely and coordinated support, please do not contact the managed print services vendor directly.
What supplies are included as part of the service?
The service includes standard white paper in letter, legal, and tabloid sizes, as well as toner and staples.
If you would like to print on specialty materials, such as colored paper, envelopes, or labels, you are welcome to bring your own and load them into the printer when you are ready to release your print job.
Who will ensure printers have supplies, such as toner and paper?
HuskyTech is responsible for ensuring printers are stocked with the appropriate supplies. In some cases, departments located near a printer may be asked to help by storing and refilling supplies.
If you notice a printer is running low or out of supplies, please contact HuskyTech.
What should I do with printer paper I’ve already purchased?
You’re welcome to keep your existing paper for your department, or, if you choose, use it with the new printers, which helps maximize cost savings across the University.
If you have extra paper and would prefer not to store it, you also have the option to donate it for broader University use. Simply contact HuskyTech, and we’ll be happy to arrange a pickup.
Are the student point allocations changing?
Yes, starting in Fall 2026, student printing becomes more affordable with a new pricing model.
Previously, students received 1,000 points, which covered about 250 monochrome pages or 40 color pages at the old rates (4¢ per monochrome page and 25¢ per color page).
With the new lower pricing (1¢ per monochrome page and 10¢ per color page), students will receive 350 points each semester. This means your points now go further for everyday printing needs, equating to approximately 350 monochrome pages or 35 color pages.

How can student employees print?
Student employees should use their employee account (StarID@minnstate.edu) when printing as a student employee, and their student account (StarID@go.minnstate.edu) when printing as a student.
