What is Direct Access

Introduction

Direct Access allows wireless devices with Windows 10 to connect directly to the SCSU network while using a 3rd-party Internet Service Provider off-campus.  DA is not VPN.  DA allows traffic destined for “campus.stcloudstate.edu.”  If you require access to any secure service that normally requires you to be located on campus, you will also need to use Remote Desktop Services, or you will need to establish a remote connection to a computer on campus.

You do not need to enable/disable Direct Access. Your computer will work seamlessly both on and off campus. To confirm that you are connected via Direct Access, click on the network icon in the bottom right task bar tray. You should see “St. Cloud University Network” and "Connected". This is the direct connection to the SCSU network.

Instructions

Confirm the status of the Direct Access connection

  1. Click on the Start menu
  2. Click on Settings
  3. Select Network & Internet
  4. Click on Direct Access and it should say 'Connected'

If your Windows laptop is no longer connected to Direct Access

  1. Open Software Center to check for updates
  2. Install any pending updates
  3. Restart the laptop

What to expect

If you restart your computer while off campus, the connection to the Admin Files, Dept Files or Files Space servers should automatically connect.

If you put the laptop to sleep, then wake it while off campus, the laptop should connect to network folders. If not, please restart the computer.

Access to secure web based applications requires Remote Desktop Services (RDS) or a remote computer.
