Parent Information on the FAFSA

Introduction

Dependent students for financial aid purposes must include parent information on the FASFA. There may be an exception under very limited, special circumstances.

Question

Do I have to include my parent’s information on my FAFSA? 

Answer

If you answer "No" to all of the dependency questions when you complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), parent information must be included. 

If you have a special circumstance and are unable to provide parent information, under very limited circumstances you may be able to submit your FAFSA without parent information. The following are not special circumstances:  

  • You are not claimed on a parent(s) income tax return  
  • You do not you live with your parent(s) 
  • Your parent(s) will not pay for your educational costs
