When to choose a major

Question

When should you choose a major?

Answer

Students can choose a major at any time. It is very common for students to enter college uncertain about which major or career path to pursue and many students change their major from their initial choice.

It is highly encouraged that students select a major by the end of their second year, but each student is unique and some programs require an earlier commitment for timely degree completion. There are many resources available to students to assist in the major decision process, such as Advising & Student Transitions and career counselors.

Students are encouraged to work with their academic advisors to explore introductory courses and complete career and interest assessments, and may also benefit from our COLL 111: Career Planning course.
