Updating Windows 10 to a Newer Version

Introduction

Computers running earlier versions of Windows 10 should be updated to version 22H2.  This update will usually take between 60-90 minutes, but could be up to 120 minutes. Please allocate time accordingly.

Make sure that your data is available on your OneDrive for Business or Dept/Admin file space prior to the upgrade.  While we have not seen data loss at this time, this is a significant upgrade and the possibility of data loss exists.

Question

How do I update my computer to a newer version?

Answer

  1. Close all applications and save your data before you begin the software upgrade.
  2. Click on the Start Menu and browse the list of programs to Microsoft System Center.
  3. Click on Software Center.
  4. In Software Center, click on Operating Systems.

  1. Select the update, then click Install.
  2. You will be asked to confirm the operating system upgrade. The upgrade automatically migrates apps, data and settings. Click Install
  3. Wait 2-5 minutes to ensure software is updating. We recommend not working on the computer.

  1. Go to the Start menu and lock the computer. The upgrade will continue. This phase will take up to 120 minutes and the computer will restart automatically.
  2. When the upgrade has completed, you will see the screen to sign into the computer.

Additional notes:

  1. If you do not see any upgrades listed in the Operating Systems window, your computer is not eligible for this upgrade. Please contact your campus or college technician if you have questions.
  2. If you want to schedule the upgrade installation, click the option “Snooze and remind me”. Select an ideal time for the reminder that is prior to the deadline listed in the message box. Click OK to approve.

  1. If you receive the error shown below, your computer may not have enough free disk space available on the internal hard drive. A minimum of 30 GB free space is recommended. Please contact your campus or college technician for assistance.

  1. If you do not have the option to install the software, please contact your college or campus technician, or call (320) 308-7000, extension 4.

  1. To confirm that the install was successful, right click on the Start menu, select System.
  • Windows specifications should show version 22H2.
