How to Scan Handwritten Work for Submission in D2L

Overview

This document provides a step-by-step guide on how to scan a handwritten assignment for submission on D2L using three different options: phone, printer/scanner, and webcam. For each option, it explains the process of capturing the image, saving, and renaming the file, and uploading it to D2L. You do not need to possess expert photography skills to effectively utilize your smart phone or tablet for capturing images of your handwritten work. Always follow the specific instructions or guidelines provided by your instructor regarding the assignment submission process.

TIP: There are numerous free scanning apps available for both iOS and Android devices, such as Cam Scanner and Microsoft Office Lens. The Notes app on iPhone or iPad provides scanning functionality. Phone scanners offer valuable features like grids to ensure proper alignment of your documents and enhancements for addressing issues like inadequate lighting. 

Use the Camera on Your Phone 

Steps for using a phone camera to capture hand-written document for an assignment: 

  1. Complete your hand-written assignment on a clean sheet of paper. 

  1. Ensure you have sufficient lighting to capture a clear image. 

  1. Open the camera application on your phone. 

  1. Position your phone directly above the paper, holding it steady and parallel. 

  1. Tap on the screen to focus the camera and capture the image. 

  1. Review the image to ensure it is clear and readable, retake the photo if necessary. 

  1. Locate the image in your phone's gallery or photos app. 

  1. If needed, use a photo editing app to crop or enhance the image for improved readability. 

  1. Rename the image file if required. 

  1. Log in to D2L, access the assignment submission area, and follow your instructor's guidelines for uploading the image file. To upload a file, click on the "Upload" button, browse for the file, select it, and confirm the submission. 

Use a Printer / Scanner

Steps for using a printer/scanner to capture hand-written document for an assignment: 

  1. Prepare your hand-written assignment on a clean sheet of paper. 

  1. Position the assignment on the scanner bed. 

  1. Ensure that the scanner is connected to your computer and turned on. 

  1. Open the scanning software or application on your computer, which may vary based on your printer/scanner model. 

  1. Adjust the scan settings like resolution and file format (PDF, JPEG, or PNG). 

  1. Preview the scan to verify the entire assignment is captured, adjust as needed. 

  1. Initiate the scanning process, allowing the scanner to capture and save the image or document to your computer. 

  1. Find the scanned file on your computer and rename it if necessary. 

  1. Log in to D2L, access the assignment submission area, and follow your instructor's guidelines for uploading the image file. To upload a file, click on the "Upload" button, browse for the file, select it, and confirm the submission. 

Use the Webcam on Your Computer / Device

Steps for using a webcam to capture hand-written document for an assignment: 

  1. Prepare your hand-written assignment on a clean sheet of paper. 

  1. Place the assignment on a flat surface in front of your computer's webcam. 

  1. Ensure proper lighting conditions to capture a clear image. 

  1. Open an application or software that enables webcam usage, such as the default camera app or video conferencing software. 

  1. Activate your computer's webcam and preview the video feed. 

  1. Adjust the position of the document within the webcam's frame to ensure readability. 

  1. Capture a screenshot of the webcam feed, capturing your hand-written assignment. 

  1. Locate the screenshot on your computer and rename it if necessary. 

  1. Log in to D2L, navigate to the assignment submission area, and follow your instructor's instructions for uploading the screenshot file. To upload a file, click on the "Upload" button, browse for the file, select it, and confirm the submission.
