How can I connect my device to a classroom setup that only supports laptops?

Introduction

ITS encourages instructors to preview and test classroom equipment before the semester begins to ensure a smooth start to class sessions.

Instructions

1. Power on the Projector

  • Use the remote control located at the instructor station to turn on the projector.
  • Note: Remote styles vary by room.

  • Ensure the projector is set to the correct HDMI input
    • Input C or Input D is standard across campus.

2. Connect Your Laptop

  • Plug your laptop into the HDMI cable at the instructor station
(typically the HDMI cable is labeled or colored red to make it easy to identify).

3. Lower the Screen

  • Confirm the projection screen is fully lowered.
  • If it is not, use the wall-mounted screen switch to lower it.

4. Shut Down After Class

  • Please remember to turn off the projector with the remote when your class ends.

Tips for Display Settings

Windows Laptops

Press Windows Key + P to open the Projection Mode menu. Choose one of:

  • Duplicate – Shows identical content on your laptop and projector.
  • Extend – Adds the projector as a second display for more workspace.
  • Second screen only – Shows content only on the projector and turns off the laptop screen.

These options apply whether connecting to a projector, external monitor, or an instructor station display.

Mac Laptops

  • Press Command (⌘) + F1 to toggle display mirroring on/off (if supported).

If the shortcut does not work, use System Settings:

  1. Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS).
  2. Select Displays.
  3. Choose whether to mirror or extend displays.
  4. If enabled, the Display menu in the top menu bar provides quick access to additional options.

Troubleshooting

  • If your image is not appearing on the projection screen, check the input source using the projector remote.
  • Audio is controlled entirely by the device you are using (laptop, instructor computer, etc.).
