⚠️ Important Password Tips

  • 🔐 Password Requirements

  • Minimum length: 15 characters
(Previously 8 — longer passwords increase security significantly)

  • Expiration: Every 13 months
    (Previously every 180 days / ~6 months)

  • Special characters: Not required anymore
(You can still use them, but they’re optional)

  • Forced resets:
You may be required to change your password immediately if:

    • There are signs your account could be compromised

💡 Recommended Best Practice: Use a Passphrase

Instead of a short, complex password, use something longer and easier to remember:

  • A full sentence, or
  • A string of random words (4+ words)
  • ✅ Example:

    MyDog8MyHomework!

    ✔ Benefits:

  • Easier to remember
  • Harder for attackers to guess or crack
  • Your account will be locked after 10 failed login attempts within 10 minutes

🔓 If your account gets locked:

  • Wait at least 10 minutes, OR
  • Contact IT:
    • Submit a service request
    • Call the Service Desk

✅ Key Takeaways

  • Use long pass phrases instead of short passwords
  • You don’t need special characters, but length matters more
  • Be mindful of repeated login attempts to avoid lockouts
  • Contact IT if you’re locked out or suspect an issue
  • Forgotten or Expired Passwords
Use the “Forgot Password” or “Expired Password” options on the portal.
If self-service fails, contact HuskyTech for assistance.

🖥️ Resetting Your Password on Different Devices

Windows Devices

On Campus (Recommended):

  • Connect to the campus network.
  • Reset your password—this ensures proper syncing.

Off Campus:

  • If connected via Direct Access, VPN, or Office Connect:

    1. Change your password.
    2. Lock your computer.
    3. Unlock it using the new password.
⚠️ Do not restart or sign out.
  • If not connected to campus systems:

    • Bring your device to campus and connect before changing your password.

Mac Devices

  • Most off-campus Macs use local accounts, so password changes only affect services like Outlook, OneDrive, and other O365 apps.
  • If your Mac uses your StarID to log in:
    • You must connect to the campus network before resetting your password.
