Federal Income Tax Information for Financial Aid

Introduction

Income and federal income tax information on your FAFSA is used to determine your financial aid eligibility.

Question

How do I include my income tax information on my FAFSA?

Answer

The best way to verify your federal tax information is to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The IRS DRT allows you to transfer your federal income tax information directly into your FAFSA.

If you opt not to use the IRS DRT and are selected for verification by the federal processors (approx. 30% of files are), you will need to provide the SCSU Financial Aid Office

  • a signed copy of your federal income tax return or a federal income Tax Return Transcript (TRT) (not an account transcript) from the IRS.
  • all W-2s for you and your parents (dependent students) and spouse (independent students).
