Preparing to meet with your Advisor

Question

How should I prepare for a meeting with my advisor?

Answer

Before meeting with your academic advisor, we suggest logging into e-Services to:

  • Check to see if you have any holds on your account that will prevent you from registering.
  • Confirm your registration window (day and time you can begin registering)
  • Review your Degree Audit Report and your major’s Degree Map to create a short list of courses you’re considering for the next semester.

Here is a list of questions you may want to ask your advisor:

  • Are there any courses that could double count between my major and liberal education?
  • Are there any pre-requisite courses required in my major that I should be aware of?
  • What requirements must I complete for my major?
  • Do I need a minor? Are there specific minors you would recommend?
  • What is the GPA requirement for my major? Are there any other GPA requirements I need to be aware of?
  • If I try to register for a course within my major and it is full, are there any particular strategies you would recommend?
  • When should I meet with you to discuss my academic plan for next semester and receive my registration access code?
  • How can I incorporate a study abroad or study away program into my degree?
  • What is the best way to contact you when I have questions or need to schedule an appointment?
