You must complete federal student loan counseling a minimum of twice - once when you first borrow and once when you are no longer enrolled at least half-time (6 credits). The federal TEACH Grant requires annual counseling and the Minnesota SELF Loan requires it at the time you apply to borrow. 

Federal loan and TEACH Grant counseling require you to log in with your FSA ID, the same one you used to complete your FAFSA. 

Entrance and Initial Counseling Requirements: 

• First-time borrowers of the federal Direct Loan must complete entrance counseling online.  
• Applicants complete Minnesota SELF Loan counseling and quiz online  
• Applicants for federal TEACH Grant must complete initial counseling.  

Exit Counseling Requirements: 

• Federal Direct Loan borrowers no longer enrolled at least 6 credits (even if not yet graduated) must complete loan exit counseling. 
• TEACH Grant recipients no longer enrolled in an eligible TEACH Grant program or coursework for an eligible TEACH Grant program must complete exit counseling.
