Introduction
In an effort to modernize and enhance the efficiency of our technology systems, ITS will soon begin configuring campus computers as cloud-connected devices. This initiative is designed to reduce costs associated with security, support, and maintenance, while improving the overall user experience.
Key Changes
- Seamless Sign-On Experience: Computers will be optimized for easier access to services such as Microsoft 365, Zoom, and Adobe.
- No Domain Join: Devices will not be joined to the traditional domain.
- Software Installation: Most applications will be available via the Company Portal, which replaces the Software Center.
- Data Migration: Department files and folders will be moved from file servers to Microsoft Teams. Local files must be migrated to a cloud location (Teams or OneDrive) prior to imaging/configuration.
Administrator Access
- Employees will not have immediate administrator rights.
- Applications will typically be installed via the Company Portal.
- Custom software installations can be performed by a technician.
- Temporary administrator rights may be granted if necessary.
- Applications requiring admin access can be added to a "safe" list to function without special permissions.
- Frequently used applications will generally be added to the Company Portal.
Benefits
- Enhanced user experience for online applications and services.
- Improved security through built-in controls.
- Greater flexibility for students, faculty, and staff.
- Simplified deployment and management processes.
- Reduced reliance on legacy infrastructure.
- Ability to leverage external support from the System Office, O365 team, and other partners for platform availability, security, device provisioning, and identity management.
- Improved access to Teams and OneDrive for multi-user and public workstations (e.g., eClassrooms and public labs).
